Q1. Is the J.R.D. Tata Memorial Library open to the public?

General public are welcome to visit the library, and take a library tour. They can also view the collection, but referencing or borrowing of documents are not allowed.

Q2. Can the library facilities be used by the students and faculty of other institutions?

Yes. Kindly ensure that while visiting the library you have the original, institutional photo ID. Students should get a letter on their institutional letterhead signed by their principal or research supervisor.


Q1. How can one become a member of J.R.D. Tata Memorial library?

IISc Student/Staff can walk into the Library's circulation counter on any of the working days between 09.00 A.M. to 05.00 P.M. along with their ID cards and can enroll themselves as a library members. IISc alumni first need to get in touch with the the alumni office

Q2. How many books can a library member from IISc borrow from the library?

UG Students- 2 Books; PG Students(Master Degree/Ph.D./Integrated Ph.D.)- 4 Books; Faculty- 6 Books; Non-faculty/Administrative staff- 2/4/6 Books depending on the staff group

Postdoctoral fellow(PDF), Temporary Staffs(Visiting faculty/Non-faculty/Administrative staff etc.) have not been allowed to borrow books from the library.

Q3. How many books can an IISc alumni or a retired faculty/staff can borrow?

Maximum of 3 books can be borrowed by an alumni or a retired faculty / staff. A nominal deposit of ₹150 per book is required. For more details, kindly contact the circulation desk staff.


Q1. How does one know if a particular physical book is available in the library, or not?

WebOPAC(Online Catalogue) could be used to find if a specific physical book title is available in the library, or not.

Books published till 1975 are shelved in the compact storage area in the ground floor of the library's left wing.

Books published from 1976 onward are shelved in the Tier I area (ground floor), behind the circulation counter.

Q1. How does one know if a particular electronic book (ebook) has been licensed by library, or not?
All the licensed electronic books (ebooks) can be browsed alphabetically, or by publisher-wise, alphabetically. It can also be searched using the simple search box in the landing page.
